Holiday Accommodation Gozo

Things to do and see
on the Island of Gozo, Malta.

The fortified Old Citadel
is situated on a hill above the capital city of Gozo, Victoria. Its main feature is the bastions surrounding this little medieval city. A visit to the Citadel is a must and will probably be the highlight of your stay in Gozo. The Gozo Cathedral, the bastions and the overall medieval atmosphere of the Citadel will surely inspire much awe and imagination

Ta' Pinu Sanctuary
This must be one of the most beautiful churches of the Maltese Islands - especially due to it's setting amongst the typical Maltese fields. It is an easy place to visit on the way to Dwejra, in the Gharb outskirts.
Many Maltese and Gozitans undertake pilgrimages to this church, as a sign of devotion

The Azure Window
is a 50 metre high rock arch in the Dwejra Point cliffs.   The sea has worn a hole through a narrow headland forming "the window" called it-Tieqa in Maltese
This area is spectacular at any time, but rough seas make it even more spectacular.  In rough weather keep well above the high water line.

The Blue Hole and The Chimney
This site is located in front of the Azure Window at the bottom of Dwejra Point. It is a shore dive, which is reached via a fairly difficult walk over rough coralline limestone, however steps have been carved into the rocks leading down to the Blue Hole.

This is a natural rock formation carved out over the centuries by wind and waves which goes down to a depth of 26 metres. The hole is about one metre above sea level and and no more than 10 metres wide and 5 metres across. However, a few metres down, this gives way to unlimited access to the sea on exiting a huge archway. A large cave can also be found at the bottom of the hole.

The Chimney is entered one diver at a time through a fissure in the almost vertical rock. This opens up at a depth of around 8 metres.

Throughout the dive, one can see various species of fish, starfish and bristle worms.  This dive is perfect for photography.

Diving
Gozo offers some of the best diving sites, not only in the Maltese Islands, but to some extent even in the world. The island's coast displays a variety of bays, coves and sea inlets with natural caves of all shapes and sizes. In the sea around Gozo one finds an abundance of marine life and spectacular scenery all around. Divers might even be lucky to encounter some archaeological remains.

They could also dive through an artificial reef in the form of a purposely sunken ferry boat that has become one of Gozo's diving mainstays. Water visibility is most often 40 metres and sea temperatures rarely go lower than 16 degrees Celsius. There are several diving schools and centres on the island of Gozo. The increasing number of those who return to Gozo for diving holidays shows the high level of service provided by these centres.

Ninu's Cave

Joseph Rapa discovered the natural cave in 1888. It is located in the rear of No 15 January Street, about 75 m from the parish church, in the village of Xagħra.

The cave is well illuminated by electric lights. It was immediately considered remarkable because of the prolific number of natural stalactite and stalagmite formations.

It is entered via a 4 m descent down a flight of steps, which end in a large chamber approximately 20 m by 8m. The calcification of water dripping from the cave ceiling formed numerous magnificent columns standing side by side like some petrified forest.

In the past the cave must have been even more spectacular because there is evidence of numerous straw stalactites, which have now been broken off. There are even a few helictites.

The formations are now dry and mainly the same colour as the surrounding rock, although some are semitransparent and it is possible to see the rings formed as they grew.
